Basantapur Durbar Square

Basantapur Durbar Square, situated in Kathmandu, Nepal, holds immense historical and cultural significance. It is designated as one of the  UNESCO World Heritage Sites. among the three Durbar (royal palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley.

Though the square’s initial construction dates back to the 3rd century, its prominent structures were added in subsequent periods. The outer complex features several 16th-century temples, a testament to the architectural prowess of the Malla kings. These temples showcase intricately carved facades, characteristic of Newar architecture. Surrounding the central square are palace complexes from both the Malla and Shah eras, with the notable Nautalle Durbar being a prominent nine-story palace constructed by Prithvi Narayan Shah to commemorate the Unification of Nepal.

Situated at the southern edge of the Durbar Square is Kumari Chouk, also known as Kumari Bahal, a three-story temple from the Malla era. This temple serves as the residence of the Kumari, a revered young girl worshipped as the living embodiment of the Hindu Goddess
